IWSG: Pay It Forward

You don’t survive in a shark-infested industry like publishing without grabbing onto to life preservers. They’re the people who keep you afloat and your head above those choppy waters. They’ll toss you a ring, jump in with you, extend a hand to pull you out of the current just when you’re ready to go down for the last time.

They’re the people who’ve been where you are, the ones who have your back, who want to see you succeed. God bless them! You don’t really appreciate just how many of these guardian angels there are until you need them. And the amazing thing . . . they don’t always wait for you to scream for help. They’re just there for you, offering exactly what you need, appearing at the strangest times to pay it forward for reasons you might not understand. Because you did what you thought was an insignificant favor: offered a kind word when desperately needed, introduced them to their next editor, read their first draft and gave honest suggestions, included them in a PR event, gave a speech or wrote an article that provided just the kick or comfort they needed at the time. You may never know, but they remember. And they’re there for you.

You’ve heard the saying “Never burn a bridge.” Here’s another one: “What goes around, comes around.” Karma can be an unforgivable beeeotch, but it can also be an unexpected blessing. So be kind, be generous, be helpful and be prepared to be rewarded beyond your wildest imaginings.

Here’s to those life-preservers who’ve listened to me moan and whine, who’ve shared their coattails, who’ve dropped everything to do a quick BETA read, who’ve offered quotes and skills and advice and inspiration, and a good swift kick just when I needed it. You’re the reason my head is still above water, even when I’m paddling like mad under the surface.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time.

Follow along with my fellow writers!

  1. YOU are one of those people, Nancy! How do you think I felt when you took the time to read Lucky, actually told me you LIKED it and then featured me on your blog? You're leading by example, lady, and I'm proud to know ya. :)

  2. I'm quickly learning that relationships are everything in this world--including the writing part of it. Like Chuck Wendig advises, I try to always put the best version of myself out there. I leave my snark in the closet at home next to the derisive laughter and the self-pitying tears.

  3. You've been my inspiration, Nancy. I didn't tell you enough how much I appreciated your quote for my 1st book (Switched) or your recommendations to make One Red Shoe better. When I was down, you kicked my butt into getting back to my writing. THANKS. I try to follow your example and pay it forward.

  5. I've been part of the writing community for two years now, and I'm still surprised by the kindness and support bloggers can give. I absolutely believe in karma; if you're good to people, people will be good to you.

  6. Words my Mom taught me to live by: What goes around, comes around. Thanks for the reminder, Nancy. I'm a newbie to the writing & blog world but thus far have been blessed to find it overflowing with people like you, willing to lend an encouraging word & a helping hand.

  7. I agree about you being one of those helpers. I do believe in Karma. I've been on both sides and sometimes when things are really tough I have to believe that things are going to settle out in the wash the right way. :)

  8. Speaking of guardian angels, Nancy, you've been there for me many, many times always ready to help me climb back on track when I derailed with my writing. You've been graciously paying it forward for as long as I've known you. Thanks for the love and support - and oh yeah, the butt-kicking! I know many writers who have benefited from your encouragement.
