WWW: What Makes a Good Man

Take one man of honor, complicate his life with a bad girl he can’t resist, force him to make a choice between duty and desire then set this tangled romance on the verge of a Shape-shifter clan war . . .

Since my last post, I’ve been recovering from the unexpected loss of my day job and preparing for a move across the state – right in the middle of the holidays. I didn’t think I’d be able to sit at the keyboard during all the upheaval, but I haven’t been able to stay away with scene after scene in my WIP begging to be told. Here’s another teaser from PRINCE OF HONOR, the latest in my “By Moonlight” dark paranormal series:

“You’re going to stop Cale on my behalf?”

He laughed this time, a slightly cynical sound. “Isn’t that what you wanted me to say?”

Very quietly, she murmured, “I wanted you to mean it. I don’t know why I expected anything different from a Terriot prince.”

“I meant it.”

“Then turn on the light so I can see it in your eyes when you tell me again?”

Turow hesitated, knowing he should ignore her, knowing better than to be coaxed into conversation. But on this lonely night, he wanted to see her face as much as he needed to soothe her fears, so he leaned forward, reaching toward the lamp situated between the two pieces of furniture.

Her heel caught him in the jaw with an explosion of pain, rocking him back into a teetering crouch, and Sylvia was on him in an instant, the length of chain she’d gathered in her hands coiling tightly about his neck.

I’m loving the way this plot is playing out. After dealing with super charged Alpha males in my last few books, Turow Terriot with his purposeful silences and rock solid convictions should have presented a problem, but I’m having such fun with the sizzling undercurrent between him and the not very nice love of his life, especially when she seems determined to complicate and perhaps end it in order to escape his family’s justice.

While waiting for this release, catch up on the House of Terriot and the introduction of both Turow and Sylvia in PRINCE OF SHADOWS and UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS.

WWW: Talking about Bad Girls

There’s nothing I like better than a good Taming of the Shrew story. Ever since watching Richard Burton and Liz Taylor at their debauched best in a feisty round-and-round when a young teen, I was hooked by the idea of a misunderstood bad girl forced to hold her own against a determined seemingly indifferent male. The sparks. The dialog. The passion!

Those are the things I’m bringing to the table (and the bedroom) in my new project, PRINCE OF HONOR, the first in my novella series “House of Terriot Foursome.” Take a stoic, dutiful shape-shifter prince whose job is transporting a willful bitch incarnate bent on destroying their clan to her probable doom, and add in a past encounter that neither has been able to forget, and let the clash of wills begin. Here’s my first teaser:

“Am I supposed to go in where it’s warm to sleep with you?” she drawled like that would be the worst of two evils.

“Don’t flatter yourself. Get up.”

She struggled to stand, cold limbs and stiff muscles offering little support. Keeping himself between her and escape, he snaked a chain with cuffed ends free of the heavy iron ring imbedded in the cement floor, tossing her one end with a gruff, “Put that on your ankle.”

As she bent to do as told, he ratcheted the other cuff to his wrist, winding the slack about his forearm until the chain put them an unwelcomed body length apart. He kicked the gate open wide and growled, “Walk ahead of me.”

With a barbed, “So you can stare at my ass?” she slipped by him to step out into the rain, using the blanket wound about her body to tent over her head as she started toward the house at an awkward gait.

About half way there, Turow caught himself watching the sway of her hips. A grim smile mocked his best intentions.

I’m just starting chapter one. Am I on the right track?

You can meet Turow and Sylvia Terriot in my new release UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS to see why I’m going to have an epic battle on my hands.

IWSG: RX for the Weary Writer

Anyone who thinks self-publishing is a simple matter of writing it, putting a title and your name on it, slapping it up on Amazon then sitting back to watch the cash roll in is self-deluding.

Even with 25 years of publishing experience and a phenomenal crew behind me it was a right down to a thin wire for my supposed to be August but now it's October book. Formating woes, setting up blog tours, writing endless posts, social media blitzs, computer troubles right up to the release date for UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS (10-26-15), and then relentless issues, tweaking, visiting posts, checking numbers, checking numbers again (even after looking at them just five minutes ago!). Can you say OCD overload?! After four weeks of up at 4:00 a.m. to write four hours, putting in an 8-hour day at my job, back to the computer in home office, eating crap food, too much coffee (if there is such a thing), can’t sleep (I guess there is!), I’m in a Groundhog’s Day hell of rapid cycling, but I have to stay on top of things.

Riding to a weekend writing retreat in a rambling rural farm house wasn’t what I wanted to do. It was what I NEEDED to do. No internet, poor cell service, eleven authors escaping life to sit at the keyboard. Paradise? I needed convincing. Eleven women under one roof with NO talking, just writing? Yeah right. Friday we talked, we cooked, we ate, we drank (but not too much), we wrote down goals and then we found our individual niches in the maze of rooms and sat down to produce. I can’t stop fretting over how the new book is doing . . . without me. Immediately another writer sits nearby, bursting at the seams to talk. Oh . . . hell. I ask the first question and her dam of frustration breaks. And in listening and giving advice, I can feel my own internal tension slipping away in a kindred osmosis. She started writing. I started writing . . . on a new project. And the words flowed as the world outside my new weekend window of creativity faded away.

Up earlier than the roosters to make paint-stripping coffee, I was back at my spot, now empty of all but ideas, almost unaware of the room slowly filling around me, falling into a relaxed pattern of sparse conversation and energized productivity. I snap up the offer of getting a shiatsu massage and knots the size of every one of my fears and frustrations are kneaded away (oh, look my neck is longer!). A gathering for serve yourself lunch, then supper, animated discussion and lots of laughs, telling ghost stories about the creaking boards around us then off to work again. Sleep, repeat, only on our last day, most writers retreat to their rooms with doors left invitingly open while they work out newly revealed plot points. By noon, an amazing amount of progress is shared. I’m well into Chapter Three. Then back to the real world . . .

I didn’t turn on my computer until that evening. And I didn’t check my numbers until the next morning. Shoulders relaxed . . .

Make time to take time for yourself, author friends! There’s no better RX than R&R!

Here’s a look at my difficult to birth new baby . . .
