WeWriWa: Becoming a Revisionary . . .

PRINCE OF DREAMS is back from my BETA readers (Huge shout out “THANK YOU!” to Sandra, Elizabeth and Alexa! You ladies are da bomb!) who all caught the same whoopsies (two I anticipated, one that was a total “Doh!”). Now to make good in final revisions and send to my trusty editor.

Today I’m sharing an early excerpt from PoD . . .

As Ophelia undressed in her bedroom, anticipating a long, hot shower, the three cards she’d pulled earlier that evening fluttered to the floor. The first, representing her Past Influence, was the Two of Wands, a card of duality, crossroads, and choice, a couples’ card of partnership, not of lovers—an accurate summation of her frustrated hopes for romance right up until earlier that night. Beneath it was that blazing Knight of emotion and relationships, her rescuer, Kip Terriot. Even now, the card vibrated with the same feelings fluttering about her chest. She hadn’t looked farther than that passionate card until now, to gage the forecast for her future.

The third card lay face down on satiny hardwood. Phe reached for it, pausing, hand hovering inches above the jewel-tone back, almost pulling away, spooked by an uncomfortable vibe, until chastising herself, she flipped it over.

The Tower, a once tall, mighty structure violently torn asunder and crumbling, the symbol of shattered beliefs, shaking a previously stable world to its foundations.

A life destroyed by a suddenly revealed truth . . .

Was Kip Terriot about to literally rock her world?

Ooooh, stuff’s about to get unreal!

I’m sitting here listening to an endless chime from my phone of e-mails bouncing as undeliverable. After an exhausting and frustrating week contacting all my vendors, promo folk, card carriers and organizations to notify of a change in my e-mail after being deleted from my MSN account, let me be a cautionary tale – back up your stuff! Double, no, triple bag those things you take for granted – like your important e-mails, your mailing lists, your contacts, your website data etc. Nothing is permanent in the ether-world. This from the School of Hard Knocks.

Have a prosperous writing week, fellow Warriors!

  1. A tarot story -- cool. I always like that element of The Man in the High Castle.

  3. Uh, oh, The Tower is a potent symbol. But it can also mean renewal and a time for positive change (or so one can hope). Great snippet.

    1. Thanks, Alexis! Out with the old, in with the new, dramatic being the operative word for change.

  6. Yikes! I love how you delay her turning over the card. Really ramps up the tension.

Well done, building tension before she turns it over!

  8. That feeling when you don't really want to know, but have to know anyway. Very relatable!

Hope you can find that info again without too much work!

    1. Don't get me started. There are things I'll never find again but mostly, I've got all the main accounts (other than e-mail phhht!) back. What a pain.

  9. Sorry to be so late commenting, was on a tight deadline for a book! I love the way you've worked the tarot cards into the story to add a whole other dimension - terrific! Very smooth, as with all your writing...great snippet.
