WeWriWa: The Danger Zone . . . RISE BY MOONLIGHT

Opposites attract, but those differences that once seemed so appealing can quickly become an obstacle if not careful. Max Savoie, the hero in my W.I.P. RISE BY MOONLIGHT is nothing if not careful until he falls hard for that irresistible opposite. The week’s excerpt sums it up.

He was a criminal turned business powerhouse, leading a clan of shapeshifters threatened with extermination.

She was a fiercely determined detective sworn to protect a very different kind of citizen from a deadly truth about to overtake them.

Charlotte walked the streets of New Orleans where its citizens were in blissful oblivion of the danger closing in on them. Part of her job was preserving their right to ignorance. The death of his mobster mentor had pushed Max’s profession upon him at the same time he’d discovered that there were others like him. His kind existed by keeping to anonymous shadows, working and living undetected next to their human counterparts in a delicate balance.

Together, the unlikely couple walked a parallel line of complications both tried not to cross. Their paths were different yet led to the same end . . . the survival of those they loved. But these recent discoveries forced their goals to merge in startling new directions, bringing those staunchly held objectives at odds once more.

And upped the level of danger beyond Max’s comfort zone.

As if they didn’t already have enough to overcome! But they will . . . at least they have about eight more chapters to make sure that happily-ever-after is secured. Those eight chapters I’m determined to get through even though my anticipated release date will come and go. Life . . . sigh. It throws unexpected curves, some unwanted, some thrilling. I’ve been riding out a combination of both but now my writing life is settling back into a productive rhythm and I’m focused on that end . . . getting this book and this series to its long-anticipated end. Thanks for your patience (though mine has been severely strained, more often than not!).

Here's how cool my new office is – they’re letting me use our cushy conference room to host my critique partners for Write In weekend after next! Whaaaaat? That’s the best work perk yet! Now, to make use of it and WRITE ON!

WeWriWa: Everything Old is New Again! REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT - S*A*L*E!

Back in 2014, I’d just finished the contracted books for Pocket – my eight-book “By Moonlight” series. I was restless for something new but reluctant to let go of the characters and a storyline I loved. I wanted to reward the loyal readers of my dark paranormal shape-shifter series with what they’d been clamoring for – the return of their first and favorite couple - shape-shifter Max Savoie and New Orleans detective Charlotte Caissie. Their road to happily-ever-after deserved a dream destination. AND, it’d be the perfect book for those new to the series because as the hero (who has no memory of the world he’s built for himself and those he loves) rediscovers his past, the reader learns about that unique yet deadly world alongside him. REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT gave me the adventure of something new and exciting in my first self-publishing venture combined with a continued series that was tried, true and dear to my heart. AND it’s BACK. Here’s a heart-breaking look at our heroine as she struggles to help the hero find his way back to their life together.

Had she expected it to be easy having him here so close and yet so agonizingly far away? Bad enough watching him in that antiseptic clinic cell, a prisoner of his own panicked madness, raving, raging, out of control, but worse was having him here in the lush, sexy surroundings he’d built for them to share, so temptingly near yet impossible to reach.

A bargain made in heartbreak hell.

Though she might be tortured by cherished memories, he was not. She was nothing to him but a protective port in his emotional storm, knowledge driven home like a stake through the heart every time they were together. Every time he stared at her through those cool green eyes without the slightest flicker of response. Every time he took that distancing step back to evade the casual graze of her hand. Every time he lay next to her in the night and silence created a force field of discomfort.

Tripping over him every minute of the damned day only emphasized how much she wanted, needed him back.

And underlined how far away he was.

I’m celebrating (perhaps prolonging would be the better word) the approaching end of the series with my W.I.P. (the 15th and final book-SNIFF!) with a
SALE to coax those who haven’t shared the journey so far, to come along for the wild ride. Hop aboard!

IWSG: Surprise! I never saw THAT coming!

One of my favorite things to do (an obsession, really!) is to see how quickly I can guess the ending of a book/movie. Rarely, do I get that satisfactory surprise (okay, Crying Game, Sixth Sense, The Prestige, you got me!) so I jumped on this month’s Insecure Writers Support Group question: Has your writing ever taken you by surprise? Answer: Every dang time.

For me, writing is an ever-evolving process of discovery. Even when first I started out with those 20-page outlines to gain publisher approval, at some point in the book, the characters ambushed me with a startling new revelation about their motivations or past that either changed or enriched the ending. If I knew it all before I started, I wouldn’t enjoy the journey quite so much. Yes, it’s an annoying, time consuming process when those sudden Ah-HAAAA moments make you go back and seed the appropriate clues to tease the reader, but in most cases, that revelation arrives from what’s already there. Percolating in the plot.

I am in no way a pantser. Not this OCD/ADD girl who needs a game plan to get out of the house and to work every morning. But the more books I wrote, the more I trusted the element of surprise to fill in the blanks along the way. To all those who curse editing, I’ve made it my buddy, skipping over those areas in contention (after marking them for the re-write) so they don’t slow my forward momentum, then go back with what I discover in that big Ah-HAAA to lay a subtle trail.

But please, no, “Where the heck did that come from?” Nothing worse than a resolution dropping from the sky to save the author from doing the upfront leg work. Or that maddening Blair Witch WTH was that?! that makes no sense. Just because one author can tell you the hero is a metaphorical cockroach, doesn’t mean everyone can get away with it. But please, don’t stop trying to surprise me and I won’t let you down, either.

So, let me give you a good surprise: Not just one - but TWO pivotal books from my paranormal series! MIDNIGHT ENCHANTMENT from “Touched by Midnight” (vampire) and REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT from “By Moonlight” (shapeshifter) are only $0.99 from August 1-15. Surprises guaranteed. Sink your teeth in and enjoy!

Happy Writing, my insecure brethren. Don’t be afraid to boldly go where your plotline has never gone before!

WiWriWa: One Fierce Alpha Male and One Heck of a Great SALE!

Nothing starts off a new month like, not just one, but TWO sales of pivotal books from my paranormal romance series “Touched by Midnight” (vampire) and “By Moonlight” (shapeshifter)! But first, to the sneak peek business at hand . . .

Last week, Charlotte Caissie, the heroine of my latest, RISE BY MOONLIGHT, was shrugging off the dangers of her role as an NOPD detective and her mate/husband Max Savoie was having none of it. Don’t you love it when two combustible chemicals interact, and you anticipate the explosion you know is coming. BOOM. Here it is.

“We are not having this conversation.”

Her curt response frosted the air between them, then as gradual as a glacial advance, his expression settled into unreadable lines, covering emotions he feared he couldn’t control. “And just when do you think it would be appropriate to discuss the risks you take with the safety of my wife and child?”

A taut impasse ensued, testing fierce convictions and even stronger wills. Neither would break or ease down until Cee Cee bit out, “Do you want to know what I think about your macho male posturing?”

“Please.” A tic jumped in his cheek before he drawled out between clenched teeth, “Enlighten me.”

Her chin hoisted to a prideful angle as a gun-site stare fixed on his. “I think,” she growled, “it makes me hot as hell.”

Max blinked, then his stare caught fire.
I think this argument is going to be settled . . . amicably.

I’ve been making marked progress in RISE BY MOONLIGHT (thanks to four days off before the start of my new job tomorrow). I’m in a celebratory mood, Soooo, I want to share the two books that brought two series back to life. MIDNIGHT ENCHANTMENT returned to the dark, historical setting of my Midnight vampire series after readers of the three original books that were long out of print still clamored for more. New genre press, ImaJinn Books (now part of BelleBooks) bought not only MIDNIGHT ENCHANTMENT but five more books in the series – and finally was able to reissue the original three. REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT did much the same for my shapeshifter series as my first self-published title, continuing the characters from the first six to RISE BY MOONLIGHT, the final #15. I’ll hype MIDNIGHT ENCHANTMENT this week REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT next.

A deal with the devil. . .

After a 400 year existence as a vampire, Gerard Pasquale wants only to be left alone to shadow the midnight streets of turn of the century New Orleans . . . until blackmail binds him to a mortal bride who throws his dark world into upheaval. Certain he can escape the unwanted bargain through the treacherous terms he makes, Gerard discovers his new wife may not be as helpless to resist his will as he at first believes.

. . . that might save them both!

Haunted by a whispered past of witchcraft and voodoo, Laure Cristobel became a bride out of necessity to protect herself and the unborn child she carries. Though alarmed to find herself wed to a monster, she's dangerously close to falling in love with the man he once was—the man she hopes she can make him once again . . . .

"An extraordinary, suspenseful tale. Ms. Gideon once again displays her awesome talents. A definite keeper!"—The New-Age Bookshelf.

Sink your teeth in and enjoy this suavely sinister antihero (my favorite of the series!) while walking the streets of pre-turn of the century New Orleans (my favorite place!) for less than $1.00!!
