WeWriWa . . . Welcome Home

I’ve always espoused the belief that home is where the heart is. The door is always open, and a place set at the table, whether you’re related or not. That’s what keeps Texas Ranger Zayn Bass returning to the place few would care to visit in this week’s excerpt from my new work in progress.

The sight of a Texas Ranger vehicle rolling down the narrow streets of Lajitas made those standing out on front stoops instinctively slip inside, doors slapping shut behind them.

Sergeant Zayn Bass didn’t take it personally. He’d had his share of indiscretions with his best friend before they’d reached legal drinking age that sent them high-tailing it too. More from parental retribution in their case than that long arm of the law.

Some would call Nathan Lupan’s home squalor. Zayn called Heaven on Earth for the loving family it housed, as he had none to speak of. They’d always welcomed him like one of their own. Even now, with him wearing a Ranger star and living in the city, anytime he was within a half day’s drive, he’d be expected at their supper table. And he happily complied.
Friends hold a special place in my heart as I’m frantically test packing for a dream trip that’s less than two weeks away. Traveling by plane, train, and automobile for the better part of a day and overnight in close quarters with a heap of luggage wedged between you can part the Red Seas of friendship. But I have no qualms when it comes to two of my critique partner besties as we ready to hunker down for three weeks in a rented house on the Dingle coast overlooking the picture-perfect town of Ballyferriter, Ireland. Squeeee!

With passport, COVID dox and Euros in hand, I’ll be storming Dublin for two days, pub, distillery, and tourist trap list in hand, with these two Emerald Isle veterans before training and cabbing our way across country to our home away from home. I CAN WAIT! Tons of pictures to come . . . One of my plans includes a daily quarantine at the desk in my upstairs bedroom where I can look across pastoral fields toward this jaw-dropping view (where they filmed scenes from the last Star Wars movie, BTW!). Oh, and I plan to get the first draft of the novel excerpted above well in hand, too.

All for now. Must visit each of you before returning to the task of stuffing everything I own into a carry on and backpack for a trial run. I know, it’s a tough job . . . but I so thrilled to be doing it after three delays!

Happy Writing, fellow Warriors!

  1. The story part of your post sounds very comforting. Like even though he doesn't have a home - he does.

The trip part of your post sounds fabulous and we all want to see loads of pictures. Have a great time.

    1. Even though I'm not the official photographer of our group, I'll be snapping plenty - more than enough to thoroughly bore everyone I know.

  2. Yeah, from what Zayn says, he does have a home, although he seems reluctant to claim it formally. But if you'd drive out of your way for half a day just to get there, then, yeah. That's home. Great beginning to your next work!

    1. Though four days will be spent in Dublin, most of our time will be in the tiny village of Ballyferrier with one main street and lots of sheep. Sounds like Heaven to me. Oh, and three pubs!
