WeWriWa: Everything Old New Again

I’m giving my W-I-P a break this week to share the rebirth of one of my Touched by Midnight vampire romances as the series is being reissued with tweaks and new covers. MIDNIGHT GAMBLE is one of my favorites. Set in the Roaring Twenties against bootleggers and a sinister mystery, Day-walking vampire, Frederica LaVoy is out to prove herself as an enforcer in her father’s tribunal court by bringing the enigmatic Darcy Edwards to trial for sins against humanity. Things aren’t looking too good
for her . . .

She was a failure, calling to her father to save her from a more powerful enemy.

In that dark tunnel, she’d crouched like a frightened animal as the sounds of trickling stones grew closer, her stalkers so sure of themselves, they hadn’t bothered to quiet their steps. She saw them, not their physical shapes, but the hungry red gleam of their eyes cutting fiery holes in the darkness.

And then a sound, at first, a rustle then a whoosh, like the gush of air from a door opening nearby. Her attackers paused, the pindots of red disappearing as they turned their heads to look behind them to see the shortness of their future in one brief instant.

He’d arrived on a rescuing whirlwind, sweeping down into that dark hole to tear through those who would threaten her, casting their parts asunder so quickly there had been no screams, which somehow made it all the more awful.

Then her father was there, the scent of blood and battle a harsh astringent as he took her into his arms, finding her in a weak and vulnerable state, barely able to stand, hardly able to confess her inadequacies where Eduard was concerned.

She’d allowed her human half to interfere with her superior judgment. How could he ever trust her again?

How could she ever trust herself?

Sometimes strength is discovered by accepting weakness . . . a lesson poor Rica is about to learn in this month’s new re-release from ImaJinn Books. It’s up for Kindle and should be available in all trade paperback and e-formats soon!

Against the uninhibited decadence of 1920’s New York where bootleg liquor flows until dawn to the sound of hot jazz and rolling dice, day-walking vampire, Frederica Lavoy stalks those of her kind to bring them to her father’s court for crimes against humankind. When a series of careless murders leads her to an exclusive club where patrons drink more than champagne from unsuspecting guests, Rica is drawn to its owner, the enigmatic Darcy Edwards.

Tricked into embracing the night during the time of Pharaohs, Eduard D’Arcy struggles to bring peace to those who are damned by what they must do to survive, yet has found none for himself . . . until he’s captivated by the unique and spirited Rica. But is it justice that waits, or vengeance, as an age-old enemy begins to manipulate both hunted and huntress? In this game of cat and mouse, the stakes are not just life and death, but the immortal soul.

Now, back to PRINCE OF HONOR. Things are about to get ugly.

See you next weekend. Happy writing!

WWW: Trust No One!

Who else is excited by the return of the X-Files? For a decade, its clever plots delighted me because you never knew what was real, what was true.

Truth and trust are huge elements in my W-I-P PRINCE OF HONOR. Very little is what it seems to be, from intentions to actions, as demonstrated in today’s sniblet:
Her heat didn’t rest beside him, the sheet cold.

Empty.

He tried to sit up but something jerked him down, that something a metal bracelet about his wrist, shackling him to the bedframe. His hazy mind recoiled in surprise. How could she have gotten to the key where it laid a room away in the pocket of his coat?

Alert and now wary, Turow let his senses sharpen before opening his eyes to a sight that scarred him, heart and soul. Sylvia stood on the other side of their shabby room, dressed in her castoff clothes, her lovely, kiss-bruised lips narrowed, her expression carefully masked. She met his gaze directly, hers betraying nothing.

Because they were not alone.

What do you think? Is Sylvia only trying to save her own skin or is she trying to protection Turow, too? Hmmm . . .

Have a great week. I hope Mercury Retrograde is dealing more kindly to you than me. My laptop no longer will do Windows updates and it takes 40 minutes to get past the Failure to Initialize message to get it to start up. Then half the time my files won’t open. Sigh. Time to go shopping!

WWW: Something Hot for a Cold Winter Morning . . .

Nothing like writing a steamy scene at 5:00 a.m. to get you revved and ready for your first day of work at the new job. Except it’s hard to tear yourself from the keyboard . . .

Time to get things heated up between the hero and heroine in my W-I-P, PRINCE OF HONOR:

Heat pounding off his body burned against the backs of her fingers as they bunched the bottom of his tee shirt, shucking it off him with a violent pull. Her palms prowled chest and shoulders, pausing for him to identify each unfamiliar scar.

At his collarbone: “Cale’s lesson on how to use a blade.”

At the glorious swell of a bicep: “Lee. Bar fight he started and I had to finish.”

Probably because he was too drunk, though Turow would never say so.

Across the hard ridge of his abdomen: “Sparring with Rico.”

Tongue dampening her lips, eyes glowing, obviously turned on by the catalog of combat, Sylvia let her fingertip follow a thin line across his left pec as she purred, “And this one?”

“You. Where you broke my heart.”

Is it hot in here or is it just me?

If you want an early peek at Turow and Sylvia together, pick up a copy of UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS for a look at their tumultuous back story.

“Complex characters, vivid writing and intriguing plot twists keep readers coming back to Gideon’s magical NOLA.” –Publishers Weekly

He feared no man, no foe, no obstacle or challenge . . .

Burdened by the weight of his secrets and his father’s sins, the need for redemption pulls Cale Terriot from his duty to his clan and the arms of his new mate into deadly intrigues in a rival territory. His dangerous masquerade in a high-stakes Shifter fight club is about to be exposed to those who would show no mercy – if he can survive in the ring.

How to protect a prince turned king made pawn?

Fearing she’ll lose her soulmate to the darkness he carries inside, Kendra Terriot, newly made queen in the Shape-shifter House of Terriot, must provide him with an heir in order to save his life . . . and his soul. But first she must risk all to coax him back from the edge of violence inherited with his crown.

Can her love tear him from an unbreakable vow that can only end in death?

“Every delicious word Nancy Gideon puts on the page exhilarates with a sensuous ferocity. Hopelessly addicted.” —Darynda Jones, NY Times Bestselling Author

And if you’re dying to see where it all started, start with PRINCE OF SHADOWS.

The fourth original eBook in the steamy Shadows paranormal romance series features a woman forced to choose a mate, and a Shifter prince who may need to give up everything to win her.

Held hostage until she chooses a mate, Kendra Terriot must play a careful courtship game when choosing among the dangerous Shifter heirs. As a prince in the House of Terriot, Cale knows he can be the leader his clan needs with Kendra at his side, but first he must learn to become the kind of man she desires. In a treacherous race for the crown, where weakness means death, the only way to win her trust could mean surrendering his throne. But the only way to win her heart could mean letting her go…

It’s out into the cold and to my keyboard away from home. Happy Writing and enjoy the rest of the weekend, fellow Warriors!!

HELLO: MY NAME IS … Blog Hop

Welcome to my first HOP of the year! Fittingly, it’s an introduction to authors you may or may not know (or may THINK you know!). Follow the HOP links to uncover fun and sometimes surprising facts about authors who write the books you love, and get in on some great giveaways.

Getting to know Nancy Gideon: (Here’s me in the wild at the Great Lakes Book Bash in October, 2015)

1. Night owl or early bird?

The birds use ME as their alarm clock. 5:00 a.m. at the Keurig then at the keyboard. Every day. A late night for me begins at 9:30 p.m. Yeah, a real party animal!

2. What music are you rocking to?

Whatever suits the characters in my latest WIP. I enjoy music almost as much as I love words. All kinds! Imagine the surprise when Rob Zombie blasts out of my car and the driver in the next lane glances over to see a gramma head banging! I always do a playlist for each new book so my current passion could be anything from German heavy metal to Sean Paul to ‘50s classics.

3. Your first kiss . . . Was it the stuff of romance novels?

A hot neighbor boy from up the street (An older man in middle school! I was tall and mature for my age!) in his garage. While everyone was playing hide and seek, we were trying NOT to be found. My first sigh-worthy romantic experience! I borrowed the encounter for a scene in PRINCE OF SHADOWS.

4. What’s your work environment like? Ms. Clean or total Clutter?

Right now, its clutter squared! I just moved and am still unpacking. One doesn’t realize how many books they have until 2 out of 3 boxes are marked OFFICE. I’m both ADD and OCD, so I guess you could call it Controlled Chaos! A clean desk makes me nervous, like I’m not really working.

5. Gourmet cook or take out?

While I DO enjoy that left over cold pizza for breakfast, I LOVE to cook, and now that I have a kitchen two people can stand in at the same time without having to turn in the same direction to avoid a collision, I’m looking forward to stirring up some yummy stuff! Breakfast omelets with asparagus or feta cheese and spinach are my specialties.

6. Favorite type of hero - Type A bad boy or Type B good guy?

I’m a hardcore Bad Boy fan. Give me the Clive Owens, the Jeremy Renners, the Dean Winchesters, and keep the softer, gentler Jude Laws and Colin Firths. I’d take a thug over a pretty boy any day! I’d be a kick butt Lara Croft – if my knees were better. No. Make that Helen Mirren!

7. Website or Blog?

While the website is great for static information (and lots of it), I love my blog for its immediacy and flexibility. It’s the difference between the newspaper and a Facebook meme. One is solid content and one is pure fun. I belong to several blog groups for inspiration and writing encouragement, and have met some wonderful people through them, but Hops are my joy. I love mingling with readers and meeting authors who are new to me. And who doesn’t love free stuff? Herding Cats always comes up with the most creative Hops. With a name like that, how could they be boring?

8. When can we get your next book and what’s it all about?

I’m currently working on “The House of Terriot Foursome” a quartet of shorter length paranormals that tie into my “By Moonlight” shapeshifter series and feature the very hot and hunky Terriot princes introduced in my latest, UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS. I hope to release at LEAST the first two or three in 2016.

In anticipation of “The House of Terriot x 4,” I’m giving away an e-copy of REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT and a $10 Amazon gift card to introduce readers to my writing and to the “By Moonlight” world, since it brings that dangerous Terriot Shifter clan to New Orleans for the first time and sets up the drama to come. Here’s a glimpse ...

Because the road to . . .

Clever, cool and preternaturally lethal, Max Savoie is leader of a secretive shape-shifter clan, heir to a mobster’s legacy, and the love of New Orleans’ top cop . . . but he can’t remember any of them. The only way to recover his past, and his rightful place in the arms of the woman who risked all to save him, is to surrender to a mysterious visitor who could use him as a weapon against all he’d loved.

Happily-Ever-After . . .

After rescuing her mate from his ruthless captors in the North, hard-hitting Detective Charlotte Caissie is now painfully vulnerable—a stranger in his eyes . . . and in his bed. The key to his memories is locked in a tortuous past. To reclaim the strength of their passionate bond, Max must learn to trust her enough to face that darkness at her side before the threat it hides exposes the secret Cee Cee carries.

Is never smooth.

When an investigation into grisly deaths in an underground Shifter fight club points to more than just dangerous clan rivalries, Cee Cee enlists Max’s help to find a traitor in their midst while there’s still time to turn a deadly invading tide. But the cost of saving their treasured future may mean sacrificing his past. Especially when the enemy they pursue . . . might be Max, himself.

IWSG: Back in the Saddle Again!

After all the bumpy potholes of 2015, 2016 has started out down a smooth paved road with a new home in a new city and, starting tomorrow, a new job! AND I’ve finally gotten back into my WIP despite the ever evolving condition of my home office (You never realize you’re a book hoarder until you start unpacking them!). At least the new cat tower is in place so my ladies can escape their trio of new doggy roommates.

No need to make resolutions this year, (Whew! Pressure off!) because everything is on a fresh path. Here’s hoping it’s well lighted and without hills and left turns into traffic.

IWSG is kicking off the New Year by announcing the winners of the IWSG Anthology Contest – today! Visit the main page to congratulate the chosen and applaud all who entered!

The happiest of New Years to all!!

Weekend Writing Warriors: On the Road Again

Now that I’ve finally stopped all the back and forthing and put down roots (and the last of my belongings) in my new home office, I’ve been able to get my characters back on the road. You may remember, my hero in PRINCE OF HONOR is transporting the heroine from New Orleans to Lake Tahoe to face their clan’s judgement for her crimes against them and she’s just as determined to see they never arrive. Here’s my 10 line scene:
After he counted back change, the clerk’s gaze touched on the woman’s. She gave her head a slight tip toward the rear of the store, eyes widening in a silent plea. Then she was all smiles again as her buff and gruff boyfriend thanked him and cinched an arm about her waist, turning her toward the door.

Alvin watched the strange couple get into the road weary truck from the driver’s side. As the brawny fella leaned across her lap to fiddle with her seatbelt, the redhead cast another plaintive look his way. Intrigued enough to note the plate number, he waited until they’d pulled out and headed west before ambling back toward the restroom.

He didn’t notice anything at first, just that the trash needed to be emptied and the floor mopped before his shift ended. When he turned to switch off the light, he saw the mirror, and the message scrawled across it in waxy lip gloss.

Help Me! And below it, a phone number.

Think the wily Sylvia has finally managed to best her captor? Let’s see where the road takes them next week as I get back on track with their storyline.

Hope you all had a fantastic holiday. I can’t wait to see where the New Year takes us!
