Midnight Crusader (Touched by Midnight Series - Book 9)
The Excerpt
He sank back into the shadows, watching her confusion as she scanned the sidewalks for him. He stayed out of sight with an anguished purpose. He hadn’t meant to reveal himself to her, not so soon, not so spontaneously without planning the result.
But he had, and he had his answer.
He passed his hand across his eyes, covering the tender torment that came with beholding her image. The sound that escaped him was half strangled sob, half moan of longing.
She didn’t know him.
No recognition sparked her gaze. No awareness leapt at the sound of his name.
He meant nothing to her.
(. . . and a bit more . . .)
How could that be when she was the very breath in his body, the very reason for his heart to continue beating in its unnatural rhythm somewhere between heaven and hell?
The scent of her lingered. The perfume she wore had passed from her tender skin to his hand, and he inhaled deeply until intoxicated by fragrant memory. Violets. Her favorite. The delicate bouquet had teased him through centuries, quickening his hopes, his desires, his dreams.
She was here. And she would be his at last.
And he would never, ever let her go again.
Such a heart-breaking line - he meant nothing to her.
ReplyDeleteGet well soon. Summer colds are not fun. Tweeted.
She feels he's familiar but can't remember from where. My cold is gone, finally! All that playing in the dirt in the sun.
DeleteBeautiful excerpt but also heartbreaking. It makes me think of loved ones who had dementia when they passed. My father had vascular dementia. He still recognized all of us but was sundowning and confused reality with scenes on TV. My aunt had Lewy body dementia. She didn't recognize anyone, but she was always giggling, which I interpret as her being in a good place. A small mercy that. My partner had early onset Alzheimer's. He was 12 years older than me and died at 62. At the end of it, there was nothing left of him.
ReplyDeleteI know you weren't discussing dementia. Sorry for going off on a tangent! The snippet made me think, which can be dangerous!

(((HUGS))) The loss of any part of self is a terrible thing but the loss of what makes you YOU is the hardest to accept by those who love you.
DeleteThat has to be devastating, that she doesn't remember him. Now what's he going to do to make her remember? He seems to be a man who doesn't take no for an asnwer!
ReplyDeleteEven though he believes the meeting had no impact it starts a chafe of awareness she can't let go until she discovers what draws them together.
Deletegreat snippet. lots of emotions in a few words.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Iris!!
DeleteIt does feel good to get away. Just returned from one myself. Family trip though, not a lick of writing. Just getting back to it today. Enjoyed the snippet. Great capturing of pain in the forgotten.
